First Lions test
Jun. 29th, 2005 07:00 amI finally got to watch it last night. Frankly, after all that I'd read I expected to be seeing a real stinker of a Lions performance but I didn't think it was that bad at all given the conditions. The one area that was horrible was the line out and I really don't understand why Byrne wasn't pulled much earlier than he was. No doubt that New Zealand were the better team but given that one of their tries came direct from a line out foul up, one from a forward pass and one from a player who was clearly offside the score probably flattered them.
For the Lions, I thought Ryan Jones was quite outstanding and that Peel, White, Jenkins and Wilkinson had pretty good games. Back was ineffective, Stephen Jones didn't do much with the little ball he had and Robinson and, even more so, Byrne had stinkers.
I've just seen Woodward's selections for Saturday and I guess the only one I can't fathom is the retention of Jason Robinson who I thought had a shocker in the first test.
