Last night [livejournal.com profile] lemur_catta and I attended a meeting of the local, not yet named, chapter of the Anthony Powell Society. (This is the nearest to fandom I get. We do not write fanfic - as far as I know - and the thought of Widmerpool/LeBas slash makes my eyeballs explode).

The conversation was incredibly wide ranging. Topics included languages spoken in the Amur river valley, the 16th century Korean navy, what might have happened if the Duke of Alba's tercios had had to fight the Japanese, the 18th century British navy, how army commissions worked before the abolition of purchase, flight simulators, Stanley Fish and even, on rare occasions, Anthony Powell.

We did compile a more or less inclusive list of pubs and night clubs in Dance and even (at least I did being a former denizen of that part of London) to identify the pubs involved in the final demise of X.Trapnel with possible 'real life' pubs in the area.

All in all, a fun evening.

I've been feeling especially Bolshie about bike lanes recently and my mood wasn't helped by being told by police officers that bike lane closures that they were supervising weren't their problem. So I fired off the following missive to the mayor:

Dear Mr. Miller,

Toronto talks a good game about being bicycle friendly but, frankly, doesn't deliver. What use are the handful of cycle lanes (and they are a handful) if they are continually blocked by vehicles. This comes in two flavours; official and unofficial. Want to film a movie? Park your vehicles in the bike lane. Need more space for construction? Close the bike lane? Want to drop off more buns to your hot dog stand? Park in the bike lane. Taxi needs to wait for a pick up? Park in the bike lane. Bell or Hydro doing work? Park in the bike lane. The net result is that cyclists trying to use the 'safe' routes through the downtown core like College and Sherbourne are regularly forced out into the vehicular traffic. The other night two whole blocks of Sherbourne were turned into a truly dangerous slalom course for cyclists by a movie shoot. I asked two of the supervising police officers why it was always the cyclists who suffered. They said it wasn't their problem, so i guess it's yours.

Here's my modest suggestion. Introduce a bylaw that stipulates two things:

1. Any vehicle, except maybe emergency vehicles, that needs to stop temporarily on a road with a bike lane shall stop on the vehicular roadway and not obstruct the cycle lane.

2. Whenever a temporary road obstruction is required, a temporary bike lane will be created, even if this means restricting motorised traffic. After all motorists have any number of routes through the downtown. Cyclists have only a handful of safe ones.

Why not?

I'll be interested to see what sort of weaselly response I get.
