Your tax dollars at work

Canada Revenue Agency goes to court to try and prove the LSE is not a university for tax puposes. Apparently Maharishi University of Management, Fairfield, Iowa and God's Bible School and College, Cincinnati, Ohio are OK though.

Asshats!

Catherine Jolicoeur, a CRA spokeswoman, said in an e-mail that the agency is reviewing the decision "to determine the impact" and added that the decision could be appealed.

Sheesh. In a hole. Digging. Why not stop it?

And apparently the Ukrainian Free University at Tartu counts. Sheesh.

(Does Durham count as a uni I wonder?)

Quite likely it's not on the pre-approved list but the idiocy would be unlikely to be as bad. I think part of the cluelessness was because the LSE doesn't grant degrees, the University of London does. This is apparently altogether too much complexity for our tax people.

Presumably they'd be equally dense about SOAS, then, despite its global prestige.

I can understand not knowing about the LSE initially. But the lunacy of planning to appeal beggars belief.

The inability to admit a mistake, ever, in the Public Service is amazing.
