Thanks to a heads up from
gregclow,
lemur_catta and i headed out to C'est What's Spring Microbrewery tasting event. I guess there were about thirty beers on offer at $1 per 3oz or so taster. We sampled about fifteen brews we hadn't had before plus maybe five more we knew as benchmarks.
Top picks:
Durham Blakk Kat stout - a well balanced stout with a long finish.
Scotch/Irish Sergeant Major IPA - a perennial favourite. It's a true IPA with a hefty hoppy kick (185 IBU).
Scotch/Irish Captain Cascade - fuller than the IPA (and 6.6% alcohol) with a real, complex bitterness from Cascade hops. This was what I drank when we stopped tasting and had a couple of pints.
Unibroue Maudite - one of the few beers we tasted that is widely available. It's a Trappiste style ale with a rich, spicy flavour.
C'est What Al's Cask - C'est what's signature cask conditioned ale and a perennial favourite (what I usually drink at C'est What). It's an interesting contrast with the Scotsh/Irish ales. It's less hoppy with a wonderful floral complexity. Different but just as good.
Black OakChurch Key Chocolate Porter - a creamy, well balanced porter with enough of a chocolate note to add complexity without being overwhelming.
I just wish some of these were more available!
