Some time ago our VCR decided to start eating tapes. We also have a rather ancient DVD player which, while it has excellent AV quality, is a bit pickie about what discs it will play and, in particular, it doesn't like discs from our digital video camera. So, today I decided to surprise the lemur on her return tonight by replacing both pieces of gear with a combo VCR/DVD recorder. This has the added advantages of reducing cable clutter, allowing us to dub old VHS tapes to DVD-R and actually playing my knock off Thai purchased DVDs!

Did you really bring in counterfit DVDs? Weren't you worried about customs? I have a friend who got a huge fine from customs at Schiphol when she was busted with a fake Louis Vitton purse that she bought in Turkey. I would have thought that visitors to Thailand would be equally suspect for DVDs ....

I didn't think about customs. I guess I would have played dumb and said I thought they were legit.

Damn, I want one of those. If it's not too nosy, how did you pick what version you got? How much was it?

It was largely a question of what was available locally. I got a Toshiba, at least partly because we have a Toshiba HD TV so I figured they ought to play well together. There is also a comparable JVC model. I paid C$460 + tax which seemed very reasonable.
