Today was supposed to be a pick up game at Sunnybrook. Unfortunately it appears that the TRU fixtures person had traded the pitch permit to an Ultimate frisbee tournament without actually telling anyone. For legal and insurance reasons pitch permit booking for city parks go through the TRU but they don't actually pay for the permits so their right to trade them away was, at best, dubious.
After a bit of a confab we decided to try Gage field as that is rarely used on a Sunday. We didn't have a permit of course but in the circumstances it seemed like a reasonable piece of piracy. True enough, there was no-one around.
We played an hour of energetic but unserious 10 a side dropping to 8 a side as injuries took their toll. Perhaps the spirit of the afffair was best summed up by two exchanges between myself and the ref.
1. Scrum is awarded at centre. Me asks politely if we can move the scrum a few feet to one side as there is a non-trivial hole exactly where I have to pack down (It's three man scrums a la sevens and I'm hooking). Ref refuses claiming he would have moved it if I hadn't asked.
2. A few minutes later, another scrum at centre. Ref says we will move it a few feet to avoid the hole. Me "But I was justing getting used to that hole".
Anyhow, an hour of any kind of rugby with the mercury up in the high 20s was more than enough.
