Is this happening to anybody else?

For the second time in recent weeks I got "friended" by someone (sic) who's journal appears to be computer generated. It looks like a scam to access "friend only" entries though for what purpose I can't imagine. The journal in question is [livejournal.com profile] sable_debutante. Has anyone else experienced this?

That journal is a bot made by someone who's someone I don't know personally but is part of my home-town university geek crowd. It crawls around friending people, and spits out entries composed of amalgams of friendslist posts.

Why would anyone want to do this? Excuse me if this is a naieve question!

To see if they can?

I thought I saw some talk of developing its interactive skills.

It unfriends you quickly enough if you don't friend it back. I got it last week.

They won't be able to access "friend only" entries unless you friend them back.

I realise that. I'm just curious about how widespread this is.

I got the same thing last week. Gone now.

Hmm. For all I know, it could have happened to me but I didn't notice.

interestingly, the user has like 750 friends, both that s/he friended and who have friended him/her back!

I got something similar, a "user" called [livejournal.com profile] fuf. I checked it out, and didn't bother friending it back.

[livejournal.com profile] sable_debutante friended me on the fifteenth and defriended me on the sixteenth. I was pretty torn up about that.

Another possible motivation could be the usual spam related nonsense. To sell you pills or pornography or whatever.

There is a way you can block specific journals from friending you. I just don't remember the method at present.

Fortunately, not yet

I have one person(?) who friended me and has zero on his/her/its lj. It's been there for a long while, but I'm not friending back without knowing something at least about this entity, like if it's a person or not for starters.

someone friended me-- i think they found me thru the bodypaint community-- and all he had on his community list were comms like "show_your_tits" and "show_your_pussy" etc. I think I banned him...

I feel the same way. I have people who have never posted on my friends list, but they're people I know in real life, who use LJ as a way of keeping up, much as we did with apas back in the day. But someone who appears out of the blue? Without sharing any information about themself with me? No, thank you.

I took a look at this journal, and though fake, the replies to the posts are actally entertaining reading. Sorta.

It's pretty astonishing how many people seem to think they are interacting with a real person.

[identity profile] chickenfeet2003.livejournal.com 2006-04-29 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Mind you, they probably think that about me too.
