We are told by China's apologists that it would be wrong for 'world leaders' to boycott the Olympic opening ceremony because 'the Olympics is not about politics'. If it's not about politics why do they invite a bunch of politicians to the ceremony?

The olympics shouldn't be about politics, but sadly it plainly is. And good point.

The Olympics have always been about politics, whatever they say. Even the definition of a "nation" is political. If the IOC decides to accept or reject a Tibetan or East Timorese delegation, it's political. There's a reason countries compete to host the event, and it's nothing to do with peace, love and fluffy bunnies.

"Politics" in the Olympics seems to mean "stuff we're doing that we want everybody to pretend we're not doing."

Clearly, people have forgotten the days of the running USA vs USSR 'medal count' that used to be shown on the front page of most major American newspapers during the good old Cold War days....
