Well, I've got 5 down, and that makes me happy. I'm pleased enough to get on in their normal crossword, never mind a prize one.

Oddly enough the regular cryptics that I have done this week have been real buggers and not very satisying. Araucaria puzzles can be hard but they always have a kind of internal logic.

I got the theme from the clue about Greek letters and US doctors, and from that point onwards it was all fairly plain sailing, albeit that the '26 - 1 ' code was an ingenious piece of misdirection. There seemed to be fewer references to obscure (to me) events from the 1920's than a normal Araucaria, as well, which was pleasing.
