So [livejournal.com profile] melted_snowball asks What's your opposite, as in describe a person who is as unlike you as possible.

Let's see.. She lives on a farm in Southern Alberta and attends the local fundamentalist Protestant church. She votes Conservative but only because she can't vote Reform anymore. She thinks homosexual activity should be a crime and that Intelligent Design should be taught in schools. Despite having only a Grade 8 education she knows that evolution is wrong because her pastor told her so. She thinks sex is disgusting but has eight children.

ETA: On reflection not nearly opposite enough. She is organic, animate and on very much the same scale as myself. My opposite should have none of these qualities. A quantum of the cosmic background radiation or a neutron star perhaps?

Oh my goodness - your opposite person sounds very close to mine.

And her husband is my opposite. A small world isn't it?

Oh and they keep dogs.

of course, and pro life but supports the death penalty so obviously the time to commit murder is from within utero.

It's interesting - looking at these - they don't really conjure up pictures of opposites at all but rather of 'people quite like me'. That is of people who share similar preoccupations to 'ego', but have reached quite different conclusions. You live in a developed society and are interested in religion, education and politics - so your 'polar opposite' does too, the difference is just that they inhabit a very different part of the religious/political spectrum from you.

Maybe the real polar opposite to you is a single mother living in a refugee camp in Ethiopia - or - what do you think?

I don't consider Southern Alberta to be part of the developed world but I take your point. There are many dimensions of opposite and I could construct many different opposites.

My opposite is a stewardess. She particularly likes the travelling, meeting and chatting with new people, actually being in the air and dealing with drunk and sick people and children.

She doesn't think very much about what it's all for, she just gets on with it. She likes to party a lot. She thinks that the Internet is a bit sad.

She has a great sense of direction but can never remember phone numbers or names.

Her hair is its natural colour, she doesn't like make-up and her shoes are all flat-heeled.

My polar opposite is grew up empowered and entitled and still doesn't know it. I think.

Interesting concept, opposites in people. Yours might well be an orang utan. Or a Russian Mafia boss who keeps her husband locked up in a cellar. Or a technophobe (Amish?) housewife.

I have a great deal in common with an orang utan.
